Why This Run Mattered

I wanted a change of run scenery, something fresh, wild, and personal. As all parents know, a little time to do something you love and enjoy is always a real treat and I was really looking forward to a vacation run challenge that would reconnect me with the trail and the sea air. Staying at the beautiful Clowance Estate gave me the perfect base. Set in sweeping grounds with a boating lake, swimming pool, jacuzzi, spa treatments, tennis courts, gym, and an indoor kids’ play area, Clowance is only 15 minutes from Penzance. While my husband and son explored pools and playgrounds, I laced up for an adventure that reminded me what independence and headspace feel like.

Planning the Route

The West Cornwall Coastal Path section from Penzance to Land’s End, finishing at Sennen Cove, is roughly 18 miles with about 3,000 ft of elevation. It’s clearly signposted, stay close to the coast and you can’t get lost. I was initially hesitant about being a solo woman on remote trails, but after a few miles I relaxed. Walkers, both solo and groups, were dotted along the path, which felt reassuring.

I carried my Scott Running light vest, filled with two soft flasks of hydration, Precision Fuel & Hydration chews, and a PB sandwich (my long-run treat paired with a can of Coke at a mid run café) see image below. The weather forecast warned of wind and showers, the wind certainly showed up (as my windswept hair in the photos proves!) but the rain stayed away. I packed a lightweight rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses, and wore ON trail running trainers for grip on the mixed terrain.

The Run Experience

The first 5 miles were technical: tree roots, rocky climbs, and even a boulder-strewn beach crossing. Don’t expect to run every step—scrambling and walking are part of the fun. Passing Marazion and Mousehole, I almost joined the locals for a sea dip, but the path called. The cliff-top sections were spectacular—endless ocean views, salty wind, and moments of total peace.

After Minack Theatre, where I met my husband and son for a quick hug and Coke, the path evened out. The final miles to Land’s End felt easier underfoot, and while the famous sign photo officially costs £12, I politely asked a fellow visitor to snap mine instead. From Land’s End it’s a short, rolling run to Sennen Cove, where my family greeted me with coffee and food from local cafés—followed by a lazy afternoon on the beach.

  • Minack Theatre Café – Perfect mid-run Coke stop

Tips for Your Own Coastal Run Adventure

  1. Check the forecast – The coast is exposed, so pack for wind and rain even on sunny days.

  2. Start early – You’ll enjoy quieter trails and better light.

  3. Hydrate and fuel well – There are limited refilling spots; carry enough water and snacks.

  4. Trail shoes are essential – Parts of the path are slippery and rocky.

  5. Don’t chase pace – Enjoy the scenery and embrace walking when needed.
