Going the Extra Mile

The mission of our LRC Environment: 27.2 programme is to do something proactive for our planet – our only training ground. We feel that Earth needs a marathon effort, plus the extra mile, to make the changes needed for a sustainable, healthy human future.

In terms of the environment, the systems that support us are under threat: clean air, fresh water, healthy soils and an unpolluted ocean. Athletes are especially sensitive and aware of environmental conditions, and taking steps to maintain our comfortable existence (pun intended) is something we all need to do together.

Background

Coach Susie started 27.2 in 2016 as a means of trying to make running eco-friendlier. With a master’s degree in Environmental Science and Policy, studied as a collegiate athlete, Susie has long puzzled over ways in which to bring sport and environmental work closer together. But she has come to realise they do not have to be mutually exclusive. There is huge potential for people to act and make change happen.

How?

In the short term, our aim is to make small personal changes towards a ‘greener lifestyle’ and we encourage you to do the same: carry reusable water bottles and coffee cups; choose non-plastic drinking straws; avoid single-use plastics; up-cycle, re-purpose and donate old athletic clothing and gear; and run or ride a bike to commute. These are just a few examples of things you can do to start lowering your environmental impact, and you probably do all of these things already!

Thank you!

This is just the beginning of our LRC Environment: 27.2 project. We hope you will join us by ‘going the extra mile’ whenever you can.
