BLOG

We are delighted to hear from LRC athletes Paul Bayley & Jo-Anna Syverson. Paul is based in the UK and Jo-Anna is in Hawaii. In this blog we ask two athletes who are divided by geography but united in their love of running and being a part of our Long Run Collective.
Take it away Jo-Anna and Paul
Paul asks Jo-Anna
1. Prefer to run solo or in a group? And why?

Depends on the run but for the most part solo.  Hard to fine along time these days with two kids so when I get a chance to run on my own it’s nice to be alone with my thoughts and try to reset and organize!

2. What rocks your world racing or training?

Definitely racing!  Such an adrenaline rush and I love feeding off the surrounding race energy, though I know sometimes it’s my downfall and I start off way too fast (much to Coach Susie’s gentle reminders to reign it in!).  It’s still such a high.

3. Daydream/listen to music or stay in the moment with nature/surroundings during runs?

Stay in the moment with nature, kinda like running solo it helps me reset and refocus.

4. Favourite food to eat during events?

Fresh fruit like cut up watermelon is refreshing and provides the natural sugars that don’t get my stomach all up knots like some gels do.

5. Love to ascend or smash the descent?

Ascend!  The downhill is hard on the knees, and I feel like over the years of training and racing I’ve gotten much better with my turnover on the up hill where it feels like I’m floating/gliding.

Jo-Anna asks Paul
1.  Do you have a favorite race distance/event?

7-10 mile fell race. Blackfell fell race in the Yorkshire Dales. Near where I grew and stunning scenery and very challenging route.

2.  Are you currently training for anything?  If not, how do you stay motivated/inspired?

Not currently training for anything after a busy early and mid season. Motivation for me running is my down time and keeps me on an even keel after work stresses. I get inspired by other runner’s in my club helping them do big challenges like the Bob Graham round or the Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge like today helping him do it in his 60s!

3.  Favorite race memory?

Finishing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks after going through cancer and chemotherapy. An emotional day.

4.  Is there an item that you cannot run/race without?

My Garmin watch.

5.  Best running/training advice you’ve received?

Rest and recovery days are the most important. I struggle with rest days. Georgie has told me off lots! 😉
